What better way to start a Vancouver Island camping trip than to take the shortcut (ferry) across the Saanich Inlet. Saves driving over the Malahat - a part of the Island Highway that is usually busy and often dangerous.

Where did all these red SUVs come from?

Gordon Bay Provincial Park on Lake Cowichan, Vancouver Island

This is our first camping trip of the year. Lots of mature trees in this park and plenty of shade. We arrived on a Thursday and the beach was deserted.

A panoramic view of Gordon Bay taken on Thursday evening.

But it was a different story on Saturday. Temperatures in the mid 20s brought out the sun worshipers.

Lots of trails to explore in the park - this one ends up at a point with a great view of the lake.
Taking a rest at the end of the trail.

View of Gordon Bay from the Point Trail.

Warning - chef at work!
